How to Pray When You’re Worried: 4 Steps to Turn Your Worry Into Prayer
If you are wondering how to pray when you’re worried, you probably have a storm raging inside you. Your mind is not calm, and you may not even be able to turn to God, even though you know you have a deep relationship with Him.
I have found this difficult in my own life too. Whenever I feel bogged down by situations in life, there are times when even my faith gets questioned.
Faith can feel mechanical. Prayer just doesn’t come. Sometimes it feels as if even my tears have dried up. And yet, I still find myself unable to stop thinking about the situation, the negative consequences, and everything that could go wrong.
Something that helps me in such situations is not finding the perfect words or the perfect posture, but simply taking the actual worry to God, to Mother. Trust me, I have even prayed while in the bathroom. I am not saying that this is the ideal place or way to pray. I am saying that when a situation becomes overwhelming, you are not always aware of where you are or who is around you. You just need help at that moment.
So I try to tell God as much as I can in my own words. What is troubling me, what I am afraid of, and what I need help with today. And for me, those words usually come in my mother tongue. That is how I connect with Holy Mother.
I am not saying I have become a pro at this. I still experience spiritual emptiness and spiritual loneliness. But with Her grace, I have gradually learnt how to turn worry into prayer. Sometimes I even tell Her, “I am saying these words, but I cannot feel You right now. Please allow me to feel this connection with You.”
So when something is making you anxious, you don’t have to pretend that everything is fine in front of God. He knows. But tell Him anyway. Prayer can begin with something as simple as, “God, this is what is worrying me.” And you can take it from there.
So, explore these four steps for how to pray when you’re anxious. It might just be the exact shortcut you are looking for—the exact blueprint to help you connect to God when your mind is not calm.
How to Turn Worry Into Prayer
When you are worried, the first thing you may want is for the worry to disappear and you might not even know what should I pray for. I understand how tiring it can be to keep waiting and being patient.
But over time, I have learnt that I don’t have to wait for my mind to become completely calm before I pray for a miracle or for the situation to improve.
I can start with the worry itself.
If you are wondering how to pray when you’re worried, try these four simple movements. You don’t have to follow them like a strict ritual. Think of them as a way to slowly take what is going on inside your mind and place it before God.
1. Name What Is Worrying You
Don’t start by trying to sound spiritual. Start with what is actually troubling you, just like Arjuna did as seen in Bhagavad Gita 2.7.
You can simply say:
“God, I am worried about…”
Then name it.
Maybe it is a relationship, your work, money, an important decision, something happening in your family, or something about the future. Whatever it is, say it clearly.
I have found that this is often easier than trying to pray about “everything.” When I am overwhelmed and don’t know what to pray to stop overthinking, I try to bring one particular worry before Mother instead of allowing my mind to jump from one problem to another.
2. Tell God What You Are Afraid Might Happen
Sometimes the worry we talk about is not the real fear underneath it.
You may say, “I am worried about this situation,” but what you are actually afraid of is failing, losing someone, making the wrong decision, being unable to cope, or facing an outcome you don’t want.
So when you pray when you’re worried, go a little deeper.
Tell God what you are afraid might happen. You don't have to hide it or make it sound better than it is. If you are scared, say that you are scared. If you keep imagining the worst possible outcome, tell Him that too.
This is where learning how to pray when you’re anxious becomes very personal. There is no need to use someone else’s words when you already know what is troubling your own heart.

3. Ask for What You Need Today
Once you have told God what is worrying you, ask Him for what you need today.
Not everything that might happen next month. Not every possible solution to the entire situation.
Ask for what you need to take the next step.
Maybe you need clarity. Maybe you need courage to have a difficult conversation. Maybe you need patience while you wait. Maybe you simply need strength to get through the day without allowing fear to take over your mind.
This has helped me because sometimes I am asking God to solve something that I cannot solve today anyway. What to pray when you’re worried can be much simpler: “Mother, please show me what I need to do today. Give me the strength to do it.”
4. Place What You Cannot Control in God’s Hands
This is the part I still am practising and understanding how to surrender to God completely.
You can do what is in your hands, but you cannot control every outcome. You cannot control another person’s choices, how a situation will unfold, or what tomorrow will bring or even how to know what God wants for you.
So after you have spoken about your worry and asked God for what you need, place the part that is beyond you in His hands.
For me, this does not always mean that I suddenly feel peaceful. Sometimes I say the prayer and the worry comes back again a few minutes later. Sometimes I have to tell Mother the same thing more than once.
That doesn’t mean the prayer failed.
It simply means I am learning how to turn worry into prayer instead of carrying the same fear around in my head again and again.
A Simple Example: Turning a Worry Into a Prayer
Suppose you are worried about an important decision and keep thinking, “What if I choose wrongly?”
Instead of replaying the same question in your mind, you can take it to God:
“Mother, I am worried that I may make the wrong decision. I am afraid of what may happen if I choose wrongly. Please give me clarity and the wisdom to do what is right today. I will do what is in my hands, but I don’t know what the final outcome will be. Please take care of what I cannot control.”
This is how to pray when you’re worried in a very simple sense.
You are not trying to produce a perfect prayer. You are taking the actual worry, the fear behind it, the help you need, and the part you cannot control—and bringing all of it to God.
How to Pray When You’re Worried: Final Thoughts
Worry may not disappear just because you prayed.
But you don’t have to keep feeding it with more fearful thoughts. When you are worried, pray.
When the worry returns, pray again. With time and God’s grace, even the worry itself can become a reason to turn back to Him.
That, for me, is what how to turn worry into prayer really means.
Keep returning to God instead of carrying the same worry alone in your mind.
