What Should I Pray For? 10 Meaningful Things to Bring to God

What Should I Pray For? It sounds like a simple question, but it can leave us surprisingly unsure.

You may sit down before God with a restless mind and suddenly wonder what am I supposed to ask for. Should I ask for what we want? Should I pray for my family, my work, my health, or simply ask God to show me the way?

I have realised over time that there is no neat boundary between the things I can take to God and the things I cannot.

I have brought my fears, confusion, desires, relationships and worries into prayer even when I wasn’t sure about how to pray to God

There have been times when I knew exactly what I wanted to ask for. There have also been times when I had no clear request at all. I simply wanted God to be there while I tried to make sense of what was happening within me, especially during phases of spiritual loneliness or spiritual emptiness – even led me to wonder if God was actually listening.

Perhaps that is why what should I pray to God about is not always an easy question to answer.

We sometimes think we need to find the right thing to ask for before we begin. But what if we started somewhere simpler? What if we brought God what is already on our heart… the thing we are afraid of, the person we cannot stop worrying about, the decision we are struggling with, or even the desire we are hesitant to admit?

When you wonder what should I pray for today, you can begin with your life as it is today.

Prayer does not have to contain only big spiritual questions. You can ask for guidance when you are confused, strength when you feel tired, peace when your mind is restless, or help when you simply do not know what to do next. You can also bring your genuine desires to God, while learning to surrender the outcome to Him.

For me, this has slowly changed the way I look at prayer. I no longer think I have to arrive before God with a perfectly formed request. Sometimes, I just begin with what is true. And perhaps that is a good place for you to begin too.

What Should I Pray For? 10 Things to Ask God

When I ask myself what should I pray for, I don’t think the answer has to be something grand or deeply spiritual. Sometimes, the things we most need to bring before God are the things already occupying our minds and hearts. Here are ten things you can pray for, depending on what you are going through.

1. Guidance when you don’t know what to do

There are times when no option feels completely right. You may be standing at a crossroads, unsure about a decision, a relationship, your work, or the direction your life is taking. You can simply ask God to guide you and help you see what you cannot see clearly right now.

You don’t always need to ask God to give you the exact answer. Sometimes, you can ask for the clarity to recognise it when it comes.

2. Strength when you feel you cannot carry something

Some situations don’t disappear just because we pray about them. I have had moments when what I really needed was not an immediate solution, but the strength to go through what was in front of me.

You can pray, “I don’t know how I will handle this, but please give me the strength to take the next step.” That is a prayer too.

3. Peace when your mind will not settle

When you are overthinking, worrying about the future, or replaying something that has already happened, peace itself can become something to pray for.

You don’t have to pretend that everything is fine. However, some days even that honesty doesn’t land the way you want it to, and prayer feels empty no matter how sincerely you show up. Still, tell God honestly that your mind is restless and ask for some quiet within.

4. Healing, including the parts nobody else can see

You can pray for physical healing, but you can also pray for the healing of something within you. Perhaps you are carrying grief, resentment, disappointment, fear, or an old hurt that you have never quite been able to put down.

Sometimes, what should I pray for is simply this: “God, help me heal where I am still hurting.

5. Wisdom to understand yourself better

We often ask God to change our circumstances, but sometimes what we need is the wisdom to understand our own thoughts, reactions and choices.

You can ask God to help you recognise where fear is influencing you, where your ego is getting in the way, or where you may be holding on to something that needs to be released.

6. Help with your relationships

The people we love can bring some of the deepest happiness into our lives, but they can also bring worry, misunderstanding and pain.

You can pray for your parents, children, partner, friends or anyone close to your heart. You can ask God to protect them, guide them and help you become a better person in your relationships with them.

And sometimes, the prayer may simply be, “Please help me understand this person better.”

7. Your genuine desires

I don’t believe you have to hide your desires from God just because they are personal or material. You may want meaningful work, financial stability, a loving relationship, a home, success in something you care about, or a particular opportunity.

You can bring those desires into prayer honestly. At the same time, you can leave room for the possibility that what you want may not be what is ultimately right for you.

8. The people you love

There are people we worry about even when we cannot do anything directly to help them. In those moments, prayer can become a way of placing them in God’s care.

You can pray for their health, safety, peace, strength and spiritual wellbeing. Sometimes, when I have no other way of helping someone I love, turning to God for them feels like the most natural thing I can do.

9. The ability to surrender what you cannot control

This can be one of the hardest things to pray for.

You may have done everything you could and still not know how something will turn out. You can ask God to help you do your part sincerely and then release what is beyond your control.

Surrender does not mean becoming passive. It can simply mean saying, “I will do what I can. Please help me accept what I cannot change.”

10. A deeper relationship with God

And finally, you can pray for a deeper relationship with God.

You can ask for greater faith, devotion, sincerity, remembrance, and the strength to turn towards God even when life is going well. And for many, regular mantra japa alongside prayer is what actually deepens that connection over time. Sometimes, the most meaningful prayer is not about getting something at all. It is simply asking to feel closer to the Divine and to remember Him more often.

So, if you are still wondering what should I pray for, you don’t have to choose only one thing from this list. Your prayer can change with your life. There may be days when you need strength, days when you need clarity, and days when you have nothing to ask for except the grace to remain close to God.

What Should I Pray to God About?

You may have noticed that most of the things we pray for are connected to something happening in our actual lives. That is why, when you ask what should I pray to God about, you don’t have to look for a special subject first. You can bring what is already on your mind to Him.

You can talk to God about a decision you are struggling with, a relationship that is hurting you, worries about money or work, something you deeply desire, or a fear you haven’t been able to share with anyone. You can even talk about something that seems too ordinary to matter. If it matters to you, you can bring it into prayer.

I have also found that prayer can be a place where you don’t have to edit yourself. You don’t have to sound calm when you aren’t calm. You don’t have to hide your disappointment, confusion, or anger.

You can tell God honestly, “I don’t understand why this is happening,” or “I really want this, but I don’t know whether it is right for me.”

At the same time, bringing something to God does not mean demanding that it happen exactly as you want. You can ask for what you genuinely desire and still leave the outcome in His hands. This is where prayer can slowly become more than asking for things. It can teach you to listen, to recognise what is within your control, and to surrender what is not.

So, what can I pray to God about? Your life, as it is. The beautiful parts, the difficult parts and even the parts you are still trying to understand. You don’t need to wait until you have figured everything out before you turn towards God.

What Should I Pray For Every Day?

You don’t need to find a completely new prayer every morning. Some things remain part of our lives for a long time, so it is natural to bring them before God again and again. If you are wondering what should I pray for every day, here are a few simple prayers you can make your own.

What Should I Pray For Guidance

When you have an important decision to make or simply don’t know what the next step should be:

“God, please guide me today. Help me see clearly, make wise choices, and not let fear decide for me.”

What Should I Pray For Strength

On days when you already know what you have to face but don’t feel strong enough for it:

“Please give me the strength to get through today. Help me take one step at a time and remind me that I don’t have to carry everything alone.”

What Can I Pray to God About: For Peace

When your mind is crowded with thoughts, and you cannot seem to settle:

“My mind is restless today. Please give me some peace. Help me stop worrying about what I cannot control and bring my mind back to You.”

What Should I Pray for the people I love

You don’t always have to pray only for yourself. The wellbeing of someone you love can naturally become part of your prayer.

“Please take care of the people I love. Keep them safe, peaceful and healthy. Where I cannot help them, please be with them.”

What Should I Pray To God About: For Surrender

There may be something you have been trying to control for weeks or months. You can bring that struggle to God too.

“I have done what I can. The rest is not in my hands. Please help me accept what I cannot change and show me what I need to do next.”

What Should I Pray To God About: For Desires

And yes, you can pray for something you genuinely want.

“God, You know how deeply I want this. If it is right for me, please help me move towards it. And if it is not, give me the understanding and strength to accept Your will.”

What Should I Pray To God About: For a closer relationship with Him

Some days, you may not have a specific problem to solve or a particular thing to ask for. You can simply pray to remember God more.

“Please help me remember You through my day. Keep my mind close to You and help me turn towards You, not only when I am struggling, but also when life is going well.”

These are not prayers you have to repeat word for word. What should I say when praying to God? There is no need to search for perfect sentences. You can use these as starting points and speak in whatever way feels honest to you, even if faith feels mechanical. Sometimes your prayer may be only a few words. Sometimes you may sit quietly before God without knowing what to say at all.

For me, that is one of the comforting things about prayer. You don’t have to sound spiritual for God to understand what is in your heart.

Final Thoughts: What Should I Pray For?

Over time, I have realised that prayer is not about finding the perfect thing to ask God for. It is about turning towards Him with honesty and trust.

So, if you are wondering what should I pray for, start with what feels most important to you right now. Ask for what you need, but also allow God to show you what you may not yet be able to see. Sometimes, the answer to a prayer begins with simply learning to trust.
